Don’t use any of the built-in variables with the word “port” in them.Don’t use the room editor to setup your views.PixelatedPope’s approach when using cameras: This is mainly for games where the view and camera needs to follow the player, but can be applied to games with a view with a fixed camera. In this case, there will only be one camera and one view. So, let’s talk about setting up camera sizes and enabling views.

It depends on the type of game you are designing and where it is critical which part of the screen can’t be cropped. If you start out with maintaining the width, your adjusted height may get cropped and you can’t see what is above or below you. If you start out with maintaining the height, your adjusted width may get cropped and you can’t see what is along the sides. When determining the effects on your game by other aspect ratios, it is best to stick with either maintaining the height and adjusting the width or maintaining the width and adjusting the height. It is best to work with a resolution that can be scaled by whole numbers and stick with one aspect ratio.

Scaling at 1.5x will result in the worst possible pixel distortion at full screen.
GAME MAKER STUDIO 2 RPG TUTORIAL 720P
What?! The reason is if you design your game at 720p and it is scaled up to 1080p, which is the most common screen resolution at the time of this writing, you will be scaling at 1.5x. Here is PixelatedPope’s Programming Pro pointers #1, “ Never design your game for 1280 x 720 or higher”. It is best to stick with one resolution and aspect ratio and rely on proper scaling. It will drive you crazy and make your code over-complicated. In summary, don’t try and design for all resolutions and aspect ratios. Shaun’s first video in his series Action RPG Tutorial does a great job of summarizing resolution. For GMS2, he recommends looking at his video on GMS2 Cameras: As Simple as Possible. Please note that even though the information in PixelatedPope’s videos are informative, some of the code will not work for GMS2 and only work in GM 1.4. Here you can find PixelatedPope’s series on Game Resolution and Aspect Ratios. This post is picking apart a couple of videos that discuss game resolution and aspect ratio. Both PixelatedPope and Shaun Spalding have great videos on GameMaker Studio 2.
